Si preguntas a cualquier vinófilo en que se parece el vino a la cerveza, la respuesta más probable es “en cero”. Pero si comparamos el mercado de la cerveza en España, y la del vino, ambos se enfrentan a un mismo problema.
El consumo per cápita de ambos productos está bajando. Los motivos son varios, pero uno que ha recibido especial atención del sector y de los medios en recientes años ha sido el trabajo de los organismos públicos en concienciar el público sobre los graves problemas de la alcoholemia. Si hay que coger el volante, hoy la gente evita el consumo de alcohol más que hace unos años.
Esta tendencia sana impacta obviamente tanto a la industria cervecera como a la bodeguera. Sin embargo, la reacción de estos dos sectores ha sido muy diferente. Empezamos con el sector que mejor ha sabido reorientarse a los nuevos tiempos. Me refiero a los cerveceros, claro.
¿Sí el público no quiere consumir alcohol cuando van a conducir, qué haces si vendes cerveza? Los cerveceros se plantearon esta pregunta, y su respuesta fue “Pues, venderles cerveza sin alcohol.” Y les ha ido muy bien. En los últimos 2 años el consumo de cerveza sin alcohol pasó de representar el 10% del consumo de cerveza en 2006 a alcanzar el 15% en 2007. De hecho, España es de lejos el país donde más se consume cerveza sin alcohol. El segundo puesto lo ocupa Francia, donde el sin representa sólo el 5,6% del consumo de cerveza.
Pero el ingenio de los cerveceros va aún más allá. En una maniobra maestral, consiguieron que el gobierno y numerosas organizaciones colaboraran en la promoción de su producto. En el 2001 los Cerveceros de España (patronal del sector) lanzaron la campaña “La Carretera Pide Sin” con la colaboración del gobierno, y el apoyo también de la Confederación Nacional de Autoescuelas (CNAE), la Asociación Española de Operadores de Productos Petrolíferos (AOP), el Real Automóvil Club de España (RACE), Ayuda del Automovilista (ADA), RACC Automóvil Club, la Fundación Instituto Tecnológico para la Seguridad del Automóvil (FITSA), el Comisariado Europeo del Automóvil (CEA) e International Rotary.
Las bodegas han tardado en dar con la estrategia
Contrasta esta estrategia (¡ya hace 7 años!) con la respuesta poca coordinada del sector bodeguero, donde hemos visto campañas tan desafortunadas como la que lanzaron en prensa el año pasado las bodegas de Castilla la Mancha con el mensaje “dos copas de vino igual a 0,0”. Según www.elperiodico.com , el texto del anuncio que publicaron se declara qué:
“Durante el almuerzo se sirvieron un par de copas de vino; es decir, 18 centilitros para cada comensal. Personas adultas y sanas. Esta cantidad [...] se demostró que [...] resulta irrelevante para el alcoholímetro de la autoridad presente, pues arrojó un resultado de 0,00 gramos de alcohol en sangre en el 100% de los casos”
¿Qué estaban pensando? Por un lado, y esto es lo de menos, 2 copas suelen sumar mucho más de 18 centilitros. Una práctica típica en España es servir 6 copas por botella de 75cl, por lo que 2 copas serían 25 centilitros. También hay restaurantes, por ejemplo los del Grupo Vips en Madrid (Bice, Tataglia, Iroco, etc.), cuya política es servir 5 copas de cada botella. En estos sitios 2 copas serían 30 centilitros. Pero centilitros aparte, aquí hubo un gran error de concepto. Una campaña que viene a decir “puedes beber alcohol y conducir sin problema” es provocar al gobierno.
Y el gobierno respondió… con una sanción de 30.000 €. Afortunadamente, empiezan a verse otras iniciativas del sector del vino más acertadas. Contaré dos de ellos.
El vino sin alcohol y el servicio de vinos por copa en promoción del consumo responsable
El primero es de una de las primeras bodegas de España, Bodegas Miguel Torres, a quienes no les ha importado coger una buena idea de los cerveceros. Hace poco esta bodega innovadora ha lanzando el primer vino “sin” de España con la marca Natureo. (He visto algunos “cavas” sin alcohol comercializadas para fiestas de niños, pero estos están en el mismo terreno peligroso que pisaron las bodegas de La Mancha). La idea es probar el mercado comercializándolo inicialmente en áreas de servicio de autopistas y en locales en aeropuertos gestionados por el grupo Áreas. Muy astuto. Pescar donde se encuentran lo peces.
A raíz de esta iniciativa he visto en algunos foros debates sobre si un vino sin alcohol puede considerarse vino. ¿Qué más da? ¿La cerveza sin alcohol es cerveza? No sé y no importa. Sólo sé que las cerveceras han encontrado en él un producto muy rentable. Les deseo a Torres la misma suerte.
La otra iniciativa que quería comentar, del que escribiré más en otro post, es un ejemplo de cómo conseguir apoyo gubernamental para una iniciativa de vinos por copa. No es difícil, solo hay que comunicar que promover el consumo de vinos por copas es promover el consumo responsable. ¿Una botella es demasiado? Pide una copa.
Esto es exactamente lo que están haciendo un grupo de bodegas en las Islas Canarias. Han elaborado una carta de vinos por copa que permite probar algunas de los mejores vinos de los diferentes denominaciones de orígen de las Islas,(todas conservadas en perfectas condiciones con el sistema de conservación de vino Presorvac) y lo están implantando en restaurantes y hoteles prestigiosos de la zona. Todo con el visto bueno de la Consejería de Sanidad. Dedicaré otro post con más detalles a esta iniciativa una vez que se lance oficialmente, que será en breve.
